This is a two day event performed in front of an audience.
On both days, round pens are set up in an arena. An unbroke horse is placed in each round pen. Each round pen consists of eleven 12 foot panels. The horses must have never been saddled, bridled, had a blanket on their back, nor ever been ridden.
Contestants compete to gentle and ride their horse using Natural Horsemanship methods. They have 2 hours the first day with a half hour break in between to work with their horse in their round pen. On the second day they have two 45 minute sessions.
Then the round pens are removed from the arena, and each
rider has 20 minutes to ride their horse thru an obstacle course in the rena. Judges decide the winner. Prize money is awarded.

Contestants are to bring their own equipment such as saddle, pad, halter, ropes and any props they may need to work with the horse that they have drawn. No abusing the horse. No blindfolding the horse. The horse cannot be tied up to be saddled. No spurs, tie downs, and no hobbles or leg restraints of any kind. No bits allowed except an O ring snaffle bit. The horse can be ridden with a halter or bridle.
In the obstacle course portion, the horse is to walk, trot, and canter around the arena once in each direction. Rider can complete each obstacle in any order. The horse also needs to back up 3 steps, and have all 4 feet picked up. The obstacles will be: weaving thru and over poles, cross a tarp, rope a barrel, and drag a pole with a rope. In any time left, the rider can show off to the audience.

We will accept your horse if it is either a gelding or a filly which is at least 3 years old. It must
never have been saddled, bridled or had anything on its back, and is sound.
Your horse must be able to be lead into the round pen with a halter and lead. Pay $100 deposit now, pay the rest on the day of the Event. You must talk to Russell Beatty FIRST before entering your horse.

to discuss your experience with starting horses to be considered to enter for any of these Colt Starting Challenges. Once he has approved your entry to a specific Challenge, then you are cleared to make payment below for your $100 non-refundable entry fee.
There are only 3 spaces available for each Colt Starting Challenge. There will be a total of 4 Horse Trainers in each Challenge, with Russell Beatty being one of the 4. You will be asked to sign a release of all claims on the day of the event.
If you want to be in a specific Challenge and it is already full, we ask if you can be a Judge for that event. This way, if one of the Trainers drops out, you can be next in line to fill their spot. Also, be being a Judge, you can see exactly what The Colt Starting Event is like, so you will be prepared for the next one you enter.
